Beaches are open!

Memorial Day fun returns to Okatibbee Lake

By Brian Livingston / staff writer

After almost two years without access to the beaches at Okatibbee Lake because of low water levels, the time will be just right this weekend to break out those floats and swimming trunks at Okatibbee Lake.

"As far as I know, everything will be open Saturday to kick off the Memorial Day weekend," said Jack Huntley, operations manager with United States Corps of Engineers. "The water level in the lake is perfect and we are looking forward to seeing everyone who've missed coming to the lake to enjoy the water."

Low rainfall since early in 2006 led the Corps to close the swimming areas later that year and all of 2007. But the recent rains have done much to fill the lake back up making it safe for all to enjoy.

"We rely solely on runoff from the surroundings areas to keep the water levels up," Huntley said. "There are no springs. Only by the grace of the good Lord has this happened."

Although fishing and camping have continued over the past two years, Huntley said the low water levels have affected the number of people who've come to the facilities. Even the marina has been impacted greatly.

"The marina will be open with gas and food for everyone," Huntley said.

But just because the water was down recently doesn't mean the Corps was sitting on their hands waiting for raindrops to fall out of the sky. Huntley said the time was well spent doing some repairs on docks and boat ramps as well as putting more fish attractors in the lake itself.

Memorial Day, which kicks off the official summer season, will see increased boat traffic. Huntley said everyone should be getting their boats and other equipment ready to hit the water in a safe manner.

"Check those life preservers and make sure your boat is in good running order before coming to the lake," he said. "Also, make sure your boat registration is up to date. Officers with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks will be out in force to ensure everyone's safety."

Okatibbee covers 4,000 acres and with gas prices continually going up, Huntley said it is a good destination for those people who just can't take a long trip this year. He pointed out the campgrounds have been upgraded with 50 amp power supplies.

"There is also a $30 annual boat launching permit you can buy so you don't have to worry about paying every time you come to the lake," Huntley added.

A recent tour by Huntley through the campgrounds showed they are in pristine shape for visitors with the vast majority of the camping sites right at the water's edge. Some of the campgrounds are setup for reservations while others are on a first come first serve status. You can contact the park service to inquire about which area best suits your needs.

"The lake is A-OK and we are expecting a very good summer," Huntley said. "We're very excited about seeing everyone come out and take advantage of this fantastic experience."
