Upcoming meeting

City of Meridian Chief Administrative Officer Ken Storms said Tuesday that he will be present at Thursday's meeting of the Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors meeting, and will be bringing a group of veteran's with him to protest the recent request made by veteran's advocate Bobbye Jerone that the county close the Lauderdale County Veteran's Service Office. "We have to have a VSO in Lauderdale County," he said. Thursday's recessed meeting of the Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors meeting from Monday is scheduled to be held at the Raymond P. Davis Courthouse Annex at 2 p.m.

Meeting: Meridian City Council. May 20, 2008.

What Happened:

• The Meridian City Council discussed budgeting problems with the Meridian Transit Authority. MTA asked the council for a sum of about $30,000 to meet their budgeting needs. Ward 1 councilman George Thomas opposed giving MTA the money, saying that they already owe the city $31,000. The council discussed possible ways to address MTA's funding problems, which they said are consistent, in the future, including privatization and adoption of a city-run transit service. The council voted 3-2 to supply MTA with the amount they requested at the time.
• City of Meridian Chief Administrative Officer Ken Storms doled out many "thank-yous" and several appreciative plaques for a job well done at Monday's Run for the Wall event that came through Meridian, which he said was extremely successful. Meridian greeted around 600 motorcyclists who came through town on their way to the Veitnam Veteran's Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. The Run for the Wall bikers rode in honor of veterans of all wars and to raise awareness about POW/MIAs.
• Naval Air Station Meridian Captain Russell Knight presented the council with a framed, signed photo of the Blue Angels to show appreciation for the money the city contributed to the recent air show at NAS Meridian.
• The next meeting of the Meridian City Council is scheduled for Tuesday, June 3 at 9 a.m. in the courtroom of the Meridian Police Department.
