Exellence in Education

Julia Crowell and Beth Watts are the recipients of the Dr. Lemann and Wilma Bounds Nursing Scholarships at Meridian Community College. These $1,400 awards are funded through the MCC Foundation from an endowment established by Mrs. Bounds.

Crowell is a 2004 graduate of Meridian High School. A Dean’s List scholar, she is a member of the Organization of Student Nurses and Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year college students. Crowell plans to pursue a master’s degree in nursing and then her certification as a nurse anesthesiologist.

Watts is a 1986 graduate of New Hope High School in Columbus. She is a member of the Organization of Student Nurses and Phi Theta Kappa. Watts plans to complete her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing. She is a student nurse associate at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center.

DECATUR — Area residents selected as cheerleaders for East Central Community College football and basketball teams for the 2007-08 school term are: Dekota Anthony and Phillip Vines, both of Neshoba Central High School; Kasey Covert and Anna Munn, both of West Lauderdale High School; Emily Thrash of Sebastopol High School; and Noah Cook of Newton County High School. Sharla Joyner of Newton County High School is an alternate.

LIVINGSTON, Ala.— The following area residents are among the more than 40 academically achieving juniors, seniors and graduate students at the University of West Alabama who are new members of the university chapter of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi:

Demopolis — Senior elementary education major Kelly E. Farnham.

Gilbertown — Senior special education major Kristin M. Mosley.

Livingston — Senior technology major Adanys Clerch; William C. Ennis, a graduate student in counseling and psychology; James B. Gibson Sr., a graduate student in history; Rochelle W. Johnson, a graduate student in social science and psychology; and Denys M. Lupshenyuk, a graduate student in education.

Macon, Miss.,— Senior physical education major Keonn D. Nettles.

Meridian, Miss.— Senior biology major Phillip A. Barham, senior mathematics education major Theresa A. “Abby” Clark, senior special education major Alison L. Crowell, junior history major Jonathan W. Marks and senior biology major Lindsay N. Marks.

Philadelphia, Miss.— Senior physical education major Elyse L. Willis.

Shubuta, Miss.— Senior business technology major Flora C. Sumrall.

Ward — Senior computer information systems major James D. Todd and junior sociology/social work major Theresa L. Todd.

Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest, largest and most selective all-discipline honor society. Phi Kappa Phi inducts annually approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni on nearly 300 select college and university campuses in North America and the Philippines.

Membership is by invitation only to the top 10 percent of seniors and graduate students and 7.5 percent of juniors. Faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction also qualify.

COLUMBUS — Hallie Freyaldenhoven of Meridian is one of two students from the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science (MSMS) who will travel to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to compete at the International Science Fair.

This comes as a result of Hallie’s research presentation “Effects of P450 Inhibitors on Fundulus Development and CYP1 Expression,” which earned “Best of Fair” at the regional competition. Hallie also earned second place in Environmental Science, Ricoh Sustainable Development Award, and the Navy Award.

At the state competition, Hallie won second place in Environmental Science, First Alternate of Best of Fair, and Navy Award for her research “Effects of P450 Inhibitors on Fundulus Development and CYP1 Expression.”

A senior, Hallie came to MSMS from Meridian High School. She is the daughter of Andrew and Donna Freyaldenhoven of Meridian.

Jewel Marie Chapple and Michael Ryan Hill have been selected to receive the Dr. George W. and Ettamac Bounds Scholarships at Meridian Community College. These $850 awards are funded through the MCC Foundation from an endowment established by Dr. and Mrs. Lemann Bounds in memory of his parents.

Chapple is a 2006 graduate of Northeast Lauderdale High School. She was a member of the Marine Corps Junior ROTC, Science Club and the basketball team. Chapple is in the University Transfer Program. Her career goal is to become a psychiatrist.

Hill is a 2006 graduate of West Lauderdale High School. He was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the basketball and golf teams, and the National Society of High School Scholars. Ryan is a member of the MCC Ivy League Recruiters and a member of the Eagle Golf team. He is preparing for a career as an anesthesiologist.

DECATUR — Art students from Newton County Elementary School who were District II Art Winners at the recent Mississippi Federation of Women’s Clubs District II meeting in Meridian were Carianne White, first place; Jordan Wall, first place; Brandi Jesmer, first place; Sarah Oliver, second place; and Kirby Keith, first place.

The first place winners artwork has been entered in the State Art Competition sponsored by the MFWC. The Newton County Elementary School art winners were sponsored by the Decatur Woman’s Progressive Club.
