Meeting: Council of Governments (COG) in which representatives of various branches of government meet to discuss issues and events — April 14.

What Happened:

• Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie said that all prison facilities in Mississippi that house state prisoners will now be subject to inspection by attorney Ron Welch, who has represented state inmates in court. He said the cost of the inspection to the county will be $3,000.
• Lauderdale County District 3 Supervisor Craig Hitt said that the county will sell its road bonds Thursday morning, and that he hopes paving will begin around the first of the month. He said the paving will include both city and county roads.
• Meridian Chief Administrative Officer Ken Storms gave an update on the reconstruction of city hall, saying that work could be near completion before the end of next month.
• Storms also said to expect to see a lot of motorcycles in Meridian on May 19. A group of riders will stop in Meridian while traveling between Phoenix, Ariz., and Washington, D.C. for the annual "Run for the Wall," a pilgrimage to the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial Wall, done to honor POW/MIA's from all wars. Storms said the riders will receive a warm welcome, and will be provided with food, gift baskets, and laundry service courtesy of various sponsors. He said many of the riders are the children of Vietnam POW/MIA's.
