Welcome Back

PHOTO BY FREDIE CARMICHAEL / THE MERIDIAN STAR

Mississippi Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant welcomes former Gov. William Winter to the Senate floor in the newly renovated Old Capitol in Jackson on Tuesday at the Legislature convened for the 2009 session in a ceremonial opening. Winter was inaugurated as governor in 1980 in the Old Capitol. The facility, which was heavily damaged by hurricanes Katrina and Rita, received a $14.2 million dollar facelift. Lawmakers will resume their normal meetings and assembly at the New Capitol today, and the museum will officially open to the public in February. Below, representatives stand at attention as a Mississippi Highway Patrol honor guard posts the colors to open the 2009 session of the Legislature at the newly renovated Old Capitol Museum in Jackson on Tuesday.
