Samuel Dale Chapter, Mississippi State Society Daughters of the American Revolution Meeting Report

MERIDIAN —     Teresa Luke of Go Green, Meridian! discussed the program's mission and programs at the May meeting of Samuel Dale Chapter, Mississippi State Society Daughters of the American Revolution (MSSDAR).

    A local chapter of Gaining Ground Sustainability Institute of Mississippi (GGSIM), Go Green Meridian!'s mission is to increase awareness, connect the community, support local farmers and businesses and to create a more sustainable and healthy life for residents of Meridian and surrounding areas

    Luke informed DAR members about the Love and Peas Community Garden, a project intended to educate and inspire not only avid gardeners, but also to demonstrate and benefit the local community by providing volunteer opportunities, fresh produce and an atmosphere to encourage people to grow their own. Tours of the garden are available.

    Luke also urged the chapter to cook at home with their own homegrown veggies. "Go Green, Meridian!" has a website – – as well as a Facebook page.

    The speaker was presented a gift from Samuel Dale Chapter for the Go Green Merdian!'s gardens.

    The May 1, 2014, meeting was called to order at 10:15 a.m. by Regent Glenda Thomas. Lynn Selman assisted Thomas with the opening ritual. Thomas led the Pledge to the American Flag and the Salute to the Mississippi Flag/ The American’s Creed was recited by Samuel Dale Chapter, DAR members.

     Becky Tomerlin presented the President General’s message. The National Defense Report was presented by Caroline Wilson. DAR minutes were read. Flag and Constitution by Thomas; Indian, Dot Shank; Rosalie, Tomerlin; Women’s Issues, Lynn Selman.

     During the business session ... On a voice vote, the reading of March and April minutes were dispensed with. Ruby Robinson read a thank-you note from Wesley House Community Center for a donation to I John 3:17 Community for Making a Difference in Meridian in honor of Mike Vick. Afterwards, Robinson presented the treasurer's report.

     Unfinished business was a discussion about the condition of the Samuel Dale monument. Robinson agreed to talk to Jim McRae about what is needed to repair the statue.

     New Business: Samuel Dale and Pushmataha chapters are in charge of table decorations for the Heartland District Meeting in July. Regent Thomas urged members to pay their dues now so Robinson won’t have to send a letter. The need for some kind of fundraiser in which out-of-town members could participate was also discussed.
    Thomas thanked the hostesses Becky Tomerlin, Christy Aldridge, Elsie Meador and Lynn Selman.
