RSVP honors volunteers, thanks local businesses and organizations

MERIDIAN — The Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Meridian honored invited volunteers with a light lunch, entertainment, and door prizes for the third year in a row.

This event was held at The Frank Cochran Center on May 22. Pulled pork, baked beans, cole slaw and deserts were provided, as well as 27 door prizes. The emcee for this event was WTOK-TV's Andrea Williams, and featured speaker was former Meridian mayor Cheri Barry. Entertainment was provided by Al Brown and The All-Stars.

Invited guests also included Mayor Percy Bland, Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie, Meridian City Council members and interim Meridian Police Chief Buck Roberts.

Volunteers are the glue that binds and strengthens a community, and we want to recognize all of them for their efforts throughout the year. If you see a volunteer at work, please take the time to stop and thank them for their service.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the following businesses and organizations for their generous donations to this event; Structural Steel, Rush Medical Group, Anderson Regional Medical Center, Coca-Cola Bottling Company, Mitchell Distributing, Magnolia Beverage, Bo Haraala AutoPlex, Lowe’s Home Improvements, Sam’s Club, WalMart, Long John Silver’s/A&W Root Beer, Pampered Bodies Salon & Spa, Newell Paper Company, Ryan’s Restaurant, T&D Furniture, Ander’s Furniture, Van Zyverden Bulbs, Lauderdale County Co-Op, Southern Sportsman, Barrett Sporting Center, Cash Saver, Best Buy, Bath & Body Works, New Era Baptist Church, St. John Missionary Baptist Church and Oak Grove Church of God.

It really takes a community effort to have an event so large and we could not have accomplished our event without the help from these special businesses and organizations
