The Meridian Star
On November 6, 2013, the regular meeting of the Samuel Dale Chapter MSSDAR was called to order by Regent Glenda Thomas. Ethel McHenry assisted Regent Thomas with the opening ritual. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Regent Thomas and the American’s Creed was recited by the membership.
Regent Thomas introduced our speaker Rev. John Branning, pastor of Central United Methodist Church and a Chaplain in the Mississippi Army Guard. When he joined the Guard as a Chaplain, he was the youngest Chaplain serving. He is the Brigade Chaplain for the 185th Aviation BDE, a helicopter unit flying Black Hawks and Apaches. His unit has been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan; he has also been deployed to Africa and Kyrgystan. He told of walking in the footsteps of some of the Old Testament notables. One of his highlights was of his baptism of a soldier in the Tigris River in Iraq. He also told of the counseling he did, saying the troops needed someone to talk to no matter what their denomination. Captain Branning is a native of Neshoba County, a graduate of ECCC, Mississippi State University, and the Seminary in Memphis.
After the program Regent Thomas welcomed Elsie Meador as a new member. Jacque Longmeier gave the President General’s report. The National Defense report was given by Caroline Wilson.
The minutes of the October meeting were read by Sarah Walters and were approved as corrected. Ruby Robinson gave the Treasurer’s report and announced that she was mailing dues and honor roll to state and national offices on November 7.
New business consisted of news that Shirley Berney is resigning. “Rosalie Rose” is a new way to raise money for Rosalie. Sarah Walters made a motion to enter Ann Schroeder and Becky Tomerlin. Caroline Wilson seconded the motion and after discussion it was decided to enter only Becky this year. The motion passed. The members collected the entry fee. Regent Thomas passed out ballots to vote for our entrant.
Announcements included reminders to fly your flag on Veteran’s Day and Pearl Harbor Day. After thanking hostesses Jacques Longmeier, Ann Schroeder, Dot Shank and Sela Jennings, Regent Thomas adjourned the meeting.
Other members attending were Lynn Selman, Elizabeth Kahlmus, Kathleen Lee, Bettye Compton, Frances Olander, and Janet Synard.
