The Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Meridian and Lauderdale County's entertainment committee is working hard to finalize plans to honor 500 local volunteers with an afternoon of live entertainment, food, and door prizes.
More than 20 local organizations have been given tickets to send representatives to this recognition event. Mayor Cheri Barry will present a proclamation, recognizing Nov. 15, 2012, as Meridian Volunteer Recognition Day in honor of all volunteers who are so busy making Meridian a better place to live. Master of Ceremonies for this event will be Ms. Sidney Covington, and entertainment will be provided by Stacy Clearman, Ginger Grissom Stevens, Sarah Carmichael, Mr. Roger Burke and The Left Overs, Sandra McMullan, Brenda Jefcoat, Al Brown, and a volunteer poem will be read by Ms. Kathleen Jordan. Drawings for door prizes will be held throughout the event.
If you know of someone who volunteers their time, talents, and skills, please say thank you to them on this Volunteer Recognition Day. And on this day, make a commitment to do something nice for someone else, no matter what your age.
To be a volunteer, it takes...
Generosity, a willingness to give your time to others
Understanding, because their lives might be very different from your own
Empathy, an ability to put yourself in someone else's shoes and feel what they must feel
Compassion, to truly care about making someone else's life better
Patience, because the process doesn't always go as smoothly as it might
Dedication, to stick with the project and see it through
As a cancer survivor, I have learned that each day is what you make of it, and starting your day by doing something nice for someone else makes you happier and healthier. One of my favorite quotes is “To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world.” A kind word or deed may mean more to the recipient than you could ever imagine.
If you are 55 years of age or older and looking for a new challenge, you can contact your local RSVP at (601) 482-0512, or stop by our office at 721 Front Street Ext. (Acme Plaza), to register as a volunteer. We have organizations needing additional assistance during the up-coming holidays.
We here at RSVP have been very fortunate to have a local sponsor who realizes the value of volunteers and who has sponsored our program for 40 years, The United Way of East Mississippi. We encourage everyone to support their local United Way to help 15 local agencies and several in-house programs, (including Imagination Library) in this community.
