Hickory MHV

MERIDIAN —     Hickory Fire Chief Ginger Hand discussed fire safety at the June meeting of the Hickory MHV Club.

Tips included place smoke detectors in each bedroom and to not leave food that is cooking unattended. Hand, who also serves as fire instructor for Meridian, distributed smoke detectors to the club members.

The meeting opened with devotion, which was conducted by Barbara Coleman, prayer; and Billie Robinson, secretary, who read scripture from Proverbs 15:1-10.

In the absence of the president, Leora Chapman, secretary, conducted the business session. Chapman did roll call, read the minutes and correspondence and presented the treasurer's report. The minutes and treasurer's reports were approved as read.

The following club members were recognized at the MHV State Council Meeting, which was held in May in Starkville: Billie Robinson won first place for a crochet jacket in the Dress Revue; Leora Chapman won second place for a frame and scarf for the Cultural Arts Division.

Nicholas Thornton was the recipient of the first Leora Chapman Scholarship. The scholarship is presented to a graduating 4-H member from any Newton County school. Thornton plans attend Meridian Community College in the fall to study public broadcasting.

Leora Chapman received the State Leaders Award for 2013 for Newton County.

One Hickory MHV member assisted in serving ice cream to the public for the Newton County Dairy Day. Chapman won first place in the Dairy Dessert Recipe Competition.

Five members were present for the June 8, 2013, meeting, which was held in the fellowship hall of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. The club is seeking new members.

The meeting closed with members reciting the MHV Creed.
