Volunteers ... the backbone of our community

The Meridian Star

MERIDIAN — On Aug. 22, RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) of Meridian/Lauderdale County honored volunteers citywide with an afternoon of live entertainment, lunch and door prizes.

I believe this event was a great success and we are always proud to host something that recognizes the great contributions of so many wonderful volunteers for helping their community. We also named two angels of the year who went above and beyond any expectations in their devotion to others: Mr. Benny Harrison and Ms. Kathleen Jordan.

A total of 25 organizations were represented at this recognition. We want to thank all of the local businesses and organizations that made this event possible: the NAS Meridian Shipmates were wonderful worker bees, and very productive young people; Structural Steel; Popeye’s Chicken and Biscuits: The Rib Shack; Bo Harrala Autoplex: Magnolia Beverage Company; Coca-Cola Bottling; Business Technology Group; Purvis Business Machines; AOTECH Solutions; Chick-Fil-A; Alice Sloan; Anderson Regional Medical Center,;CVS Pharmacy; Mr. Discount Drugs; Squealer’s Barbeque; Sam’s Club; Anders Furniture Company; Brenda Jefcoat; Community Bank; First State Bank; Meredith McDonald; Amy & Lamar Gidden; Little Acre Home and Patio Furnishing; Honey Baked Ham; First Lady Designer Hats; East Mississippi Business Development Corporation (EMBDC); Lowe’s; Marvin’s Building Supply; Ferdie’s Discount Liquor; Cash Saver Grocery; South of the Border; Woodstock Furniture; Donna Allison; American Red Cross, Key Chapter in Meridian; Western Sizzlin'; Lauderdale County Farm Supply; Newell Paper Company; Island View Casino, Gulfport; Cynthia Thompson and The Chicken Basket.

And ... all the entertainers who donated their time and talent. THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR DONATIONS.

NSCA bound

I am honored to represent Meridian – and Mississippi – as I pack my bags to attend a National Senior Corps Association board meeting next week in Washington D.C. I will also represent RSVP programs in a 10-state cluster of the US (the Southern cluster). I look at this opportunity as a learning experience, and an opportunity to represent Senior Corps programs at a national level. I think it says a lot about volunteerism in Mississippi that two members of this prestigious board are from Mississippi.

of the Month

Our Volunteer of the Month for September is Mr. Edward Mikell.

A retired member of the Air National Guard, Mr Mikell came to us earlier this year prior to his retirement from the military. He has made himself available extensively for special projects, including the Meridian Volunteer Appreciation Day event.

Mr. Mikell is also a member of the RSVP Advisory Council. He is married to Teresa Mikell.
