MERIDIAN — Volunteers are the backbone of any service organization and the United Way of East Mississippi and Retired Senior Volunteer Program of Meridian/Lauderdale County recognize this.

On Aug. 22, a Meridian Volunteer Appreciation Day event will honor 700 volunteers from throughout Meridian and Lauderdale County with an afternoon of entertainment, lunch and door prizes to celebrate volunteerism in Meridian. Volunteers donate more than just their time. They are educated, talented, individuals who give their most valuable resource – their hearts to everyone whose lives they touch.

More than 30 local non-profit organizations and agencies will receive tickets to this event. If you know an outstanding volunteer in our community who did not receive a ticket, please call our office with their contact information.

Volunteer of the Month

RSVP Volunteer of the Month for July is Ms. Kathleen Jordan, who is very active in our community outreach program Operation Helping Hands.

Kathleen is a volunteer who will bring her own crew when participating in the Mississippi Gleaning Network. With her assistance and the help she brings, we have picked 100 gallons of fresh produce that we donate to local charities. Kathleen and her crew of volunteers have made four trips into the strawberry fields of Clarke County (The Mathis Farms), to help feed others in the community.

Kathleen also serves on the RSVP Advisory Council.

Fundraiser

RSVP will be collecting recipes for an upcoming fundraiser.

We will be designing and printing our own cookbook, which will include 400 recipes.  We hope to have the cookbook completed by early fall and ready for sale before the holidays. The cost will be $10 per book.

Money generated from cookbook sales will be used for volunteer appreciation. Ten percent of the sales will be donated to feeding the hungry in Meridian, through LOVE’s Kitchen and Feed by Faith.
