Sheriff Billy Sollie of the Lauderdale County Detention Facility discussed fraud, especially among senior citizens, at the June meeting of the Suqualena Community Development Club.
According to Sollie, the elderly are mostly often targeted for fraud. He stressed to never give out any personal information over the phone, internet or to anyone you do not know.
"Always make sure you safeguard your credit or debit card," he advised. "Never give out your credit or debit card numbers."
Sollie also discussed the detention facility's medical budget and overcrowding.
"Some inmates are being housed in Kemper County," he said. “Certain inmates cannot be put together if they have prior backgrounds together."
Commenting on the state's new open-carry gun law, – which was temporarily blocked June 28 – Sollie said he is not in favor of openly carrying a weapon unless the person has a permit.
Sollie reminded members to be extra careful when entering stores and their homes. And to always be aware of their surroundings and to report anything suspicious.
Annette Palmer, president, called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Lloyd Hutcherson.
Joane Mackey presented a devotional from Deuteronomy 8:16. "He fed you with manna in the wilderness so that you would become humble and so that your trust in Him would grow and He could do you good." Mackey used the story of a grandmother pruning her roses to illustrate. By cutting off the dead blooms, the healthy ones would have more nourishment and would grow.
"God is like that with us. He prunes us to make us grown stronger in our faith," Mackey said. "We should always thank Him for testing us. He always provides the manna we need.
The minutes were read and approved.
Yard of the Month was presented to Becky and Jackie Fulton. The door prize was won by Betty Gunn.
The club's annual picnic is scheduled for July 23. There will be hot dogs and homemade ice cream with all the fixings. Palmer stressed that everyone invite a guest and to call members not at the meeting.
