Special to The Star
The Meridian Star
Auditions for the upbeat hit musical “Legally Blonde” will be held Monday and Tuesday at Meridian Little Theatre.
The play will be under the direction of MLT’s interim artistic director, Ronnie Miller.
“Legally Blonde” follows the events of Elle Woods, the quintessential Valley Girl who realizes she has more to offer than just a pretty face and a bubbly personality. So when her good looking, but pompous boyfriend, Warner Huntington III, dumps her for someone more “serious,” Elle puts down her credit card, hits the books, and sets out to go where no UCLA Delta Nu sorority girl has gone before – Harvard Law School!
Along the way, Elle learns that being true to yourself is a quality that never goes out of style. Based on the popular film starring Reese Witherspoon, this fun show will have you rooting for Elle and her unconventional ways from start to finish.
“Legally Blonde” has a huge cast with over 40 named parts ranging from 16-40 years of age. Lots of opportunities for men and women in this show for lead and supporting roles as well as chorus members who will play multiple parts. We need singers and dancers who want to learn and have a great time doing so,” Miller said.
Lead roles are: Elle Woods; Warner Huntington III; Emmett Forester, a smart and sensitive law student who takes Elle under his wing; Professor Callahan, a pompous and manipulate law professor at Harvard; Paulette Buonofunte, a brash and funny hair stylist who is friends with Elle and longs to find a man for herself; and Vivienne Kensington, an intelligent and savvy law student who initially dismisses Elle, but grows to be her friend. Several supporting roles are also available including Kyle, the Irish UPS Guy, and Bruiser, Elle’s dog.
If auditioning for the lead roles, music from “Legally Blonde” will be available at auditions, or you may bring 16 bars of an uptempo song (about 30-35 seconds) from a modern Broadway musical and 16 bars of a ballad from a modern Broadway musical. You must bring a copy of your sheet music for the pianist.
If auditioning for supporting roles and chorus, prepare 16 bars of an uptempo song from a modern Broadway musical and bring a copy of your sheet music for the pianist.
Those auditioning for lead and supporting roles will also be asked to read from various scenes from the script.
Carol Merrill is choreographer of the show and dance auditions will also be part of each night’s auditions. David Benson is musical director/conductor and will be available as piano accompanist for singing.
“If you want to work backstage on costumes, props or on the stage crew, please attend the auditions and sign up," Miller said. "The musical has several set pieces and we will need a lot of production people for the show to move around several large set pieces."
Rehearsals for the show will begin Thursday at 6:30 p.m. and will continue Mondays-Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. until the opening performances, which are scheduled for Oct. 17-23. Additional rehearsals may be called for some weekends prior to the show.
