More volunteers, cookbook recipes needed

MERIDIAN — The Retired & Senior Volunteer Program of Meridian needs your help.

    We are currently seeking individuals 55 and older who have free time to help meet the needs of their community. We are in the process of committing our assistance to other worthwhile programs in Meridian, such as The Salvation Army, Feed by Faith, and LOVE's (Lauderdale Outreach and Volunteer Effort) Kitchen.          The benefits of volunteering for RSVP include;

    • Gaining valuable experience in a variety of settings.

    • Meeting new and interesting people.

    • Personal rewards, including public recognition.

    • Mileage reimbursement

    • Self-satisfaction

    • Limited liability insurance

    • Strengthening your community

    You determine your own hours, days and location where you wish to volunteer. We have a list of possibilities for you at our office in Acme Plaza.

    We also need individuals interested in being trained as tax preparers to assist low-income individuals and families in the upcoming tax season. We provide the training here at our office and you will be trained at the advanced level as determined by the Internal Revenue Service. Basic computer knowledge is helpful.

    Training will begin in late October-early November. Individuals of any age can be included in this training by calling our office at (601) 482-0512, and adding your name to the list of interested persons.

    If you are not comfortable preparing taxes, but at least 55 years of age and have free time, you can register to be a greeter/intake person.

Got recipes?

    We are still gathering recipes for a cookbook fundraiser and would appreciate help from the community with recipes. Recipes may be mailed to: 721 Front Street Ext., Suite 760, Meridian, MS 39301 (Acme Plaza)l faxed to (601) 483-7011: or e-mailed to: Diana.glover@unitedway.org

Volunteer of the Month

    Our October RSVP Volunteer of the Month is Clara Moncrief, who has been with our organization since October 2012.

    Clara is on our special events committee and currently volunteers at both Feed by Faith and The Anderson Regional Cancer Center. She is also interested in being a greeter during tax season to welcome and sign-in those who need our assistance.         We really enjoy Clara’s commitment to our program, her warm smile and her enthusiasm.
