BEEP Team networks at regional seminar

MERIDIAN —     The Best Early Education Practices (BEEP) team traveled to the Southern Early Childhood Association (SECA) regional conference in Williamsburg, Va. The BEEP project is sponsored by the Phil Hardin Foundation, the Stranahan Foundation and MCC.

    The BEEP staff, Pat Harvey, Michelle Thompson, Mae Welch and Win Maxey-Shumate, project coordinator, attended workshops that ranged from increasing physical activity with young children to the importance of being playful to working with parents to help children prepare for kindergarten.

    Maxey-Shumate presented the workshop, “Buttons All Around Us,” showing how to use an everyday object across all the curriculum areas to help children enhance social/ emotional, cognitive, pre-reading and fine and gross motor skills.

    Forty-seven attendees comprised the teacher friendly interactive workshop that was designed to explore age, developmentally and individually appropriate kinesthetic activities that supported all kindergarten readiness skills.

    The BEEP team networked with child care workers, community college and university students and professors from states that ranged from Texas to Florida. Maxey-Shumate said Meridian Community College’s AAS program for Early Childhood Education h is in line with other community colleges and universities across the region. The BEEP project staff are pleased that the project was well received and recognized as a grass roots model that supports young children, their families, the community and all levels of the school systems.
