Newton County MHV

MERIDIAN —     Laurie Beth Thames of Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital in Jackson was guest speaker at the annual Newton County Awards Banquet, which was held Feb. 7, 2014, at East Central Community College.

Thames shared the day-to-day operations at the hospital. She also thanked Newton County MHV for their contributions, which include making featureless dolls, small night gowns, wheelchair totes and turbans for cancer patients.

Club president Rosie Logan announced that the MHV Clubs donated 4,129 volunteer hours in 2013, with an economic impact of $91,416.06 for the community.  Newton County has had MHV clubs in the community for more 70 years, and they are considered a vital organization in community service, education, and quality of life for residents of Newton County and surrounding areas.

Wardene Mason welcomed and thanked the banquet sponsors: Citizens Bank, Newton County Bank, Bank Plus of Newton, and Great Southern National Bank of Decatur. She noted that Newton County is the only county in Mississippi that honors its MHV volunteers and has done so for 38 years.

Shirley Johnson of St. John MHV presented the invocation.

    The following awards were presented:

    • Outstanding MHV Club: Hickory MHV, first place;  Lawrence MHV, second place; and St John MHV, third place.
