The Meridian Star
In keeping with the spirit of the holidays – celebrating the Savior's birth with friends – members of the Friendship Garden Club were the guest of member Hilda Roberts for a luncheon and Christmas party at Northwood Country Club in December.
A brief business session preceded the Dec. 3, 2013, meet. Members were shown pictures of the beautiful Christmas tree they decorated at Merrehope for the Annual Trees of Christmas Tour. Norma Joan Williams, Kay Smith and Karen Scott were recognized for their work.
Devotion and prayer were presented by Roberts, who shared a Christmas story by Joni Eareckson Tada titled “If I Had Been There,” a story about what we might have done if we had come upon the baby Jesus in the manger.
"Of course, we like to think that we would have come to the aid of Mary and Joseph and the Baby," Roberts read. "Martin Luther says that now that we know about the love and power of Jesus it is easy to say that we would have risen to the occasion and acted on behalf of the young couple and their child. But would we be any different from the people of ancient Bethlehem? Probably not. We must work to remember that Jesus said that whatever we do to the least of men we do to him.
"In the rush to accomplish everything on our list, we need God’s help to make a difference for those in need around us and to make that difference in us. Lord, give us a heart of compassion and the genuine spirit of Christmas," she said.
After the luncheon, members played Take-away Santa. Kristie Stultz was welcomed as a guest.
The January meeting was postponed due to inclement weather.
