Samuel Dale Chapter, DAR

MERIDIAN —       Samuel Dale Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution's (DAR) Volunteer of the Year Award winner Scott Gray was the special guest at chapter's May meeting.

Gray was presented the award in April, but was unable to meet with the club at that time. Regent Glenda Thomas and Gray discussed some of the reasons he was chosen for the honor, including, he has been a coach since he was a teenager and continues to work with youth through the Optimist Club golf and t-ball programs, West Lauderdale soccer, Boy Scouts of America and others.

The May 1, 2013, meeting was called to order by Thomas. Lynn Selman served as chaplain and assisted Thomas with the opening ritual. Janet Sinyard led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America. Thomas led the Salute to the Mississippi Flag and the American’s Creed.

The President General’s Message was presented by Ann Schroeder. The National Defense Message encouraging support of our military was presented by Caroline Wilson.

The DAR minutes included a Constitution Minute, in which Thomas said Benjamin Franklin suggested opening meetings with a prayer and was told there was not enough money to hire a chaplain. Jacquelyn Longmeier presented an Indian Minute from the Encyclopedia of Native American Tribes, describing the Sun Dance – known by different names, but with the same quest, a vision.

Becky Tomerlin presented the Rosalie Minute reminding members that the fall pilgrimage in Natchez will be September through Oct. 14.

During the business session, the minutes of the last meeting were read by Caroline Wilson; they were approved as read. The treasurer’s report was presented.

Thomas asked members to sign up to serve as hostesses for next year and to fill slots where chairmen are needed for committees. She also announced the installation of officers will be in September.

The regent reminded members of special days coming up this year and to fly their flag on those days: National Day of Prayer, May 2; Mothers Day, May 12; Armed Forces Day, May 18; Memorial Day, May 27. On Memorial Day, the flag should be flown at half staff until noon and then raised.

The program consisted of members sharing interesting information about their ancestors and service in the early days of this country.

Ann Schroeder and Becky Tomerlin served as hostesses at Rosalie during the spring pilgrimage in Natchez. The two noted that it is something everyone should experience..

Members present were: Caroline Wilson, LoRita Mitchum, Ethel McHenry, Lynn Selman, Sandy Gaddis, Becky Tomerlin, Ann Schroeder, Bettye Compton, Glenda Thomas, Janet Sinyard, Jacqueline Longmeier and Ruby Robinson.

The chapter's next meeting will be in September.
