MERIDIAN — The first meeting of the new year for Samuel Dale Chapter, Mississippi State Society Daughters of the American Revolution (MSSDAR), was held Jan. 8, 2014, with Regent Glenda Thomas presiding.

After calling the meeting to order, Thomas invited everyone to partake of refreshments from the chapter's New Year's party. Later, Thomas – assisted by acting Chaplain Lynn Selman – conducted the opening ritual.

The Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag was led by Janet Synard. Thomas led the salute to the Mississippi flag and the American’s Creed.

The President General’s message was presented by Thomas.

Caroline Wilson’s National Defense message was about George Washington being the “Greatest Military Enemy of Great Britain.” His designation was the result of an online poll that consisted of five nominees: George Washington, Michael Collins of Ireland, Napoleon Bonaparte, Field Marshall Rommel of Germany, and Mustafa Kemel Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey.

During the business session, DAR minutes and other reports were read.

Selman conducted a memorial service for member Elaine Sorrels, who passed on April 4, 2013. A  resolution from the chapter will be presented to her family.

The MSSDAR State Conference is scheduled for Feb. 13-15, in Jackson. Thomas and Sarah Walters will attend the Feb. 14 session. Elizabeth Kahlmus made a motion to elect Alice and Susan Lockley as alternates; Caroline Wilson seconded the motion, and it carried unanimously.

It was noted that the Mansion Market at state conference will be different this year: each chapter will donate one or two items for the silent auction. Walters donated a crocheted Afghan/full bed-sized spread made by her Aunt Lois Smith (who was a member of the Samuel Dale Chapter in 1976) the year she died.

Thomas collected committee reports for the Master Questioner. Heartland District MSSDAR (of which Samuel Dale Chapter is a member) will serve as the state conference's decorating committee. Members collected $35 to help with the decorations.

Thomas thanked hostesses Sandy Gaddis, Shirley Knight, Robin McCarty and Becky Chaney.

The chapter's joint luncheon with Pushmataha Chapter, MSSDAR, is Feb. 13 at noon at Northwood Country Club.

The meeting adjourned at 11:30 a.m.

Members attending were Frances Olander, Elizabeth Kahlmus, Ann Schroeder, Ruby Robinson, Dot Shank, Ethel McHenry, Caroline Wilson, Lynn Selman, Janet Synard, Sarah Walters and Glenda Thomas.
