Volunteers to be honored Aug. 22

MERIDIAN — Every community across America heavily depends on volunteers to help with projects throughout the year.    On Aug. 22, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Meridian/Lauderdale County will host an event to honor volunteers throughout the Meridian area. The luncheon will feature live entertainment and door prizes.

Volunteers assist nonprofits in reaching their goals without additional costs, and volunteerism gives seniors an opportunity to serve others in a meaningful way. Seniors are the most important human resource in any community. They have a diverse set of skills that cannot be taught because they evolve from life experiences. Not only are seniors dedicated to helping others, but they are also eager to learn new skills.

We are honored to recognize volunteers for their service to this community. They serve with love throughout the year.

Grant writing workshop

This fall, RSVP and United Way of East Mississippi will host "Writing a Grant Proposal: The Basics."

Scheduled Nov. 5, the class will teach participants  the key components of the grant proposal writing process, thus enabling them to write more persuasive grants and secure more resources for their organization. They will learn how to conduct grants research, develop a needs statement, create a budget and assemble the proposal package.

The class will be held at the RSVP-United Way office, located at 721 Front St. Extension, Suite 760 (Acme Plaza). Cost is $99 for Mississippi Center for Nonprofits (MCN) members; $139 for non-members.

You can pay by credit card on-line or register and mail in a check to: Mississippi Center for Nonprofits

201 West Capitol St., Suite 700, Jackson, MS 39202

To register, go to (look for link to Nov. 5 workshop on page), or call Mississippi Center for Nonprofits at (601) 968-0061, ext. 15

Volunteers of the Month

Arline Baker, Mary Brown and Rose Allen Reid were instrumental in helping The United Way of East Mississippi sort, stack and organize their school supplies from their “Stuff the Bus” event.

“All three of these wonderful ladies go above and beyond to help with Stuff the Bus every year," said Sara Odom, Campaign & Community Impact Director of United Way of East Mississippi.

"Their kind and loving hearts are so apparent when you see the way they give of themselves for the betterment of our community,” Odom said.

We need YOU!

RSVP of Meridian/Lauderdale County is actively recruiting individuals 55 and older to meet the added demands for volunteers locally.

We offer a wide array of opportunities for service. You can choose when, where, and how many hours you want to serve. To learn more, stop by our office in Acme Plaza at 721 Front St. Extension, Suite 760, or call (601) 482-0512.

    • Diana S. Glover is director of RSVP of Meridian/Lauderdale County.

Do you think the city of Meridian should aggressively enforce the city's code enforcement laws on litter, abandoned homes and overgrown lots by issuing tickets and stiff fines?
