The Meridian Star
By the time you read this, you will have attended the annual May Is Older Americans Month Health Fair and Fish Fry, where you enjoyed music by the Singing Saints, had your balance checked by representatives of Anderson’s Rehab Center at the health fair, perused the 20-plus health fair stations, and eaten some wonderful fried fish prepared by the 186th Air Refueling Wing and served by the NAS Shipmates.
Hopefully you appreciate being an older American (55-plus)and being honored this month by friends and neighbors. For it is by funding collected by local businesses — your friends and neighbors —that makes these events possible.
The celebration is not over by any means. Look at the upcoming events and mark your calendar:

May 19-23 is National Senior Corps Week. On May 22, the Meridian/Lauderdale County Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) will host a Volunteer Recognition Luncheon at the Frank Cochran Center in Highland Park.
Meridian/Lauderdale County RSVP Director Diana Glover has worked like a whirling dervish to make this third year of recognition lunches a huge success. It will be hosted by WTOK-TV reporter/anchor Andrea Williams, who will begin the program at 10 a.m. and introduce several local celebrities.
RSVP is the United Way organization that does free tax filing for citizens, helps people prepare their Last Will and Testament, living will and power of attorney. Glover is also a notary public.
Becoming a volunteer is a great opportunity for seniors to keep active in the field of their choice or have an opportunity to try something entirely different from what they did as a career. One can usually choose their own hours. Phone Glover at (601)482-0512. Call her for reservations to the luncheon.
Because the 2014 Older Americans Month theme is “Safe Today, Healthy Tomorrow,” Meridian Activity Center is offering three Wednesday morning sessions with physical therapist Dr. Stephen Kay to learn how to care for “the bck.”
At 10 a.m. Wednesday – and also on May 14 and 21 – Dr. Kay will spend an hour sharing his knowledge of the human physique to aid us in taking care of it. I can recall a back problem not long ago where I had to roll out of the bed, hit the floor on all fours and crawl into the bathroom. It’s funny now recalling the look on my cat’s face.
No reservations are required to meet Dr. Kay.
Another class we will offer in June is a continuation of the beginning yoga we taught for four weeks in April. Although much of the class is practiced while sitting in chairs, the benefits of stretching is the same as in an upright stance. Some work is done standing to practice balance, which is so important as one grows older. All it takes is one fall and a broken hip.
Which is a good reason to consider taking one of the strength-training classes we offer. Lifting weights is not for body building necessarily, but for strengthening bones and joints to aid in preventing breakage.
Both classes are held mornings, at 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Come give it a try.
Meridian Activity Center can be found by following signs posted at 29th Avenue and 36th Street, turning west on 36th, two blocks, left turn on 33nd Avenue – you will see our arched sign at the end of the block: Meridian Activity Center. 3300 32nd Ave. Phone (601) 485-1812 for information. Come in for a tour and to pick up a list of classes. We’d love to meet you! Summer classes begin June 2.
