Mississippi rooted

Hometown artist returns to A&L Series lineup

MERIDIAN — Ready for some high-energy acoustic roots music?

Then come to Meridian Community College’s McCain Theater on Tuesday, when Mississippi Chris Sharp and Friends perform for the Arts & Letters Series.

The show starts at 7 p.m. and tickets are $10, adults, $5, students, and are available by calling the Arts & Letters Series office at (601) 484-8696. Tickets also are available at the door an hour before the performance.

Sharp is a Meridian native who writes, sings and records. He appears as a regular on the nationally-syndicated radio and TV program, “The Sucarnochee Review.” He claims another Meridian son – the Father of Country Music - as a favorite of his.

"I cut my teeth on Jimmie Rodgers records," said Sharp, who learned his first Jimmie Rodgers' tunes from Rodgers’ sister-in-law, Elsie McWilliams. He also took guitar lessons from another Rodgers relative, Virginia Shine.

In addition to guitar, Sharp plays mandolin, banjo, mando-cello, bass and violin, and his music as been described as “spicy American at its best.” He has appeared on Turner South Network’s “Three-Day Weekend.”

Sharp also performed for the 2010-11 Arts & Letters Series season.
