RSVP honors volunteers, seeks mothers of veterans

MERIDIAN — Every year since 1963, May has been a month to appreciate and celebrate the vitality and aspirations of older adults and their contributions to our communities.     The theme for this year's Older Americans Month, "Unleash the Power of Age," has never been more fitting. Older Americans are productive, active and influential members of society, sharing essential talents, wisdom, and life experience with their families, friends, and neighbors, as stated by the Administration on Aging

AARP volunteers

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Meridian/Lauderdale County would like to take this opportunity to honor some very special volunteers – our AARP tax preparers, who worked diligently throughout tax season to prepare taxes for citizens in the Meridian and Louisville areas. We were so proud to offer these volunteers space at our office to prepare taxes on Tuesdays for low income and elderly citizens.

On Thursdays, East Mississippi Electric Power Association provided them space to prepare tax returns.  This group, led by Ms. Sandra McMullan, filed approximately 400 tax returns this year, and looks forward to the 2013 tax season.

Looking for mothers

of veterans

RSVP is seeking out mothers of veterans in hopes of helping to establish the first local chapter of the nationally recognized organization Blue Star Mothers of America Inc., which honors mothers of veterans. If you are a mother of a veteran, whether they are serving now or served the past, please call our office at (601) 482-0512.

We are also trying to recognize God Star Mothers in Meridian. Gold Star Mothers are mothers who have lost a child during service to their country. Gold Star Mothers should call our office and leave their contact information.

A day

to honor

The broadest and maybe the most meaningful definition of volunteering: Doing more than you have to because you want to, in a cause you consider good. –Ivan Scheier

On Aug. 22, RSVP and United Way of East Mississippi will honor local volunteers on Volunteer Appreciation Day.

We will distribute tickets to this event through nonprofit organizations and the RSVP office. Live entertainment, food and door prizes will be provided to more than 500 volunteers. If you know someone in this community who stands out due to their volunteer heart, please call our office with their contact information so that we can make sure they get a ticket to this event.

Volunteers are the glue that binds and strengthens communities. Meridian is fortunate to have so many good volunteers who make our community a better place to live.

Mississippi could borrow $20 million to help Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. update its factory in Tupelo. In return the company would pledge to maintain at least 1,300 jobs and invest $140 million in the plant. Do you think this is a good investment on the state's part?
