MERIDIAN — We have a responsibility to show our children right way

Sometimes I get filled with all kinds of emotions at once. Does that ever happen to you?

Well, this morning when I was reading a post about the recent murder in Meridian, I was overwhelmed with a mixture of sadness, rage, disgust, blame, pity, and thankfulness. An innocent, elderly man was shot down in a senseless act of greed by a young man who apparently had no moral compass within his soul to guide him in the right direction.

But then again, I am wrong. We all have that moral compass within our soul that is there to show us right from wrong. Sometimes we just choose not to use it. I felt sadness for the family of the man killed and pity, rage, and blame for the family of the one who did the killing.

What was that young boy taught? Did anybody ever tell him about that moral compass that God puts within each of us? Did anybody ever tell him how to be a decent, loving human being? Did anybody ever share kindness with him or tell him that he was loved and cared about?

Whether they did or didn't, there is never an excuse for what he did. Maybe his parents tried to teach him? Maybe he got mixed up in the wrong group and their influence was stronger than his parents. Maybe nobody ever prayed for him. There are so many maybes in this situation. I don't know the entire story.

I DO know that somewhere down the line, in his 16 years of life, someone failed him. Someone forgot to teach him that killing was wrong. Now, a sweet man, who had a family who loved him, has to make arrangements to lay him to rest. His family will always be reminded of their tragedy on a very special day of the year … Mother's Day.

Yes, there is a reason for everything. Maybe this young 16 year old will figure that reason out while we pay for him to sit in jail, not working, eating three meals a day, hanging out with others like himself.

Meanwhile, those who lost this precious man, will try to figure out the reason, too. That, they may never know. Pray for your children, people. Don't give up on them. God entrusted them to you to take care of and teach right from wrong.         Discipline them. Let them know that there are consequences to every action they do. As parents, we have a huge responsibility to show them the right way. Don't ever lose sight of that! Don't ever stop letting your children know that they have that moral compass within and it is there for a reason.

Let them know you love them and are praying for them daily. Let them know that they are created by God to do good things, not to do evil ones. Pay attention to them. Put your thumb on them. Do what it takes to keep these tragic things from happening.

You are the parent. It's about time you start taking that responsibility seriously! It's time to stop all this useless killing and wrong doing! It's time to step up to the plate and take this community, city and country back! What do you say? I say, GAME ON!
