MERIDIAN — Markham an asset to community

Kindness and consideration are alive and well in Meridian.

On my way to my daughter's home on Easter Sunday, my car had a very bad flat tire. I pulled into the gas station on the corner of North Hills Street and State Boulevard Extension.

A very nice gentleman came to my aid, changed my flat tire and was so polite. I asked him his name because he looked so familiar. It was Dustin Markham, a member of our city council.

His concern for me was so genuine. He is a true asset to our community. Thanks is such a little  worked but I hope he reads this.

Exercise your right to vote

How can you motivate people to get to the polls to vote?   On June 3, Mississippi will have a primary election. Terribly boring, huh? Let’s look at what could happen if the Republicans get their way.

Here are some of the issues on their agenda. Dismantle Medicare and Medicaid. Turn public schools into for-profit businesses. Take away women’s health centers for family planning, as well as take away birth control pills.

It was amazing that 57 percent of Mississippians voted against the “personhood amendment” and then voted for Phil Bryant who immediately went to work to establish the “personhood” agenda.

The Republicans are against minimum wage. Mississippi teachers are the lowest paid in the U.S. and yet, so many of our teachers continue to support the GOP. Republicans are against everyone having an equal shot at health care.

There are 300,000 working Mississippians without health care because our Republican Legislature will not make it available. They want the insurance companies to make unlimited profit and to be able to refuse insurance for anyone with a chronic disease. They would close the Post Office so private companies could take over the delivery business. Imagine the cost of stamps then! T

he Republicans are okay with a $3.2 trillion war, but don’t worry about the jobs bill that has been in Congress for years to help the unemployed find jobs. Nor would Republicans give a helping hand to the 16.1 million children living in poverty in America.

They even voted against veterans’ benefits! Get registered to vote and exercise your right in the June primaries and the general election in November.

Do you think the city of Meridian should aggressively enforce the city's code enforcement laws on litter, abandoned homes and overgrown lots by issuing tickets and stiff fines?
