Explaining the difference: Veterans Day, Memorial Day

There seems to be some confusion when it comes to celebrating Veterans Day and Memorial Day. Veterans Day is to honor all those who served honorably in the military. It gives us a chance to say “thank you” to those living veterans who sacrificed and did their duty to secure our freedom.

Memorial Day is a day when we remember and honor those who died in the service of our country, especially those who died in battle or as a result of their battle wounds.

As we honor veterans on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, my mind goes to a group that was formed on Sept. 27, 1939, at Key Field in Meridian.

That would be the 153rd Observation Squadron, which was called to active duty on Oct. 15, 1940, to serve during World War II. This unit is now known as the 186th Air Refueling Wing. For more than 67 years, this unit has served our area, our state and our nation well.

To my knowledge, only four of the original group are still with us. Mr. Sam Montgomery, Mr. Milton Windham, Mr. Howard Smith, and Mr. W.I. Munn are the surviving members of the 153rd. If I am wrong, please let me know.

Before it is too late, we need to honor these men in a special way. If you are willing to help or have suggestions, please contact me.

Thousands have served in the 153rd and the 186th. To these, and to all who have served our country in the military, thank you.
