Meridian home to key players in state's cultural heritage

I was saddened to learn of the recent passing of two great musicians from Meridian, Paul Davis and Al Wilson. Davis, with his chart-topping 70s hits, “I Go Crazy,” and “Cool Night,” was an amazingly talented singer and songwriter. Wilson's outstanding vocals on the hit single “Show and Tell,” landed him the number one spot on Billboard’s Top 100 chart in 1974.

Contemplating the tragic loss of these two musicians brought me to realize Meridian’s contribution to the arts and culture of our great state. Not only has unbelievable talent come from your community, but your residents are dedicated to continuing Meridian’s vibrant artistic history. The opening of the Grand Opera House in 1890, and its first production of Johann Strauss’s “The Gypsy Baron,” marked a extraordinary beginning for what is now your community’s cultural showpiece, the MSU Riley Center. This facility provides Meridian with a venue to showcase the talents of some of this country’s most outstanding performers, in addition to offering excellent educational programming for students in your area. The Mississippi Arts Commission is honored to have been able to provide support for the renovation of this historic facility through our Building Fund for the Arts grant program.

This year, we were also able to recognize the unending generosity of Meridian resident, Emma McCain, through our Governor’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts. Since 1988, this event has recognized some of Mississippi’s most gifted performers, dedicated cultural organizations and generous arts patrons. It was our honor to acknowledge Ms McCain’s charitable contributions to the arts in Meridian.

In closing, I would like to extend my most sincere appreciation to the residents of Meridian for being a jewel in Mississippi’s artistic crown and for outstanding contributions to our state’s overall cultural heritage.
