Locals react to hotel presentations

Downtown Meridian's Union Station meeting room was packed beyond capacity Thursday night as more than 200 residents came to hear arguments for both sides of the downtown hotel controversy.	The debate centers around competing proposals for downtown hotels designed to complement the conference facilities at the Mississippi State University-Riley Center for the performing arts. HRI Properties' Threefoot hotel proposal would transform the deteriorating Threefoot building into a Courtyard by Marriott hotel. Lala Enterprises' proposal would demolish several buildings downtown and erect a brand new Hyatt Place hotel and banquet hall.

Collapse probe ongoing

Officials with Yates Construction Company said Tuesday it may take a week or more to determine exactly what caused a structural collapse Monday morning that injured seven workers.	One person was pinned under the debris when at about 10 a.m. a portion of the Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center Medical Towers project being built at 16th Street and 22nd Avenue fell in while workers were pouring concrete onto the second level. Five of those workers were members of a concrete finishing subcontractor while two others were Yates employees.

Inaugural tickets in high demand

WASHINGTON (AP) — So your member of Congress has declared a first-come, first-served policy on handing out hard-to-get tickets to Barack Obama’s presidential swearing-in. Sounds fair enough.	But in a town where ‘‘yes’’ can mean ‘‘no’’ and the definition of ‘‘is’’ has been rhetorically spun, ‘‘first’’ does not necessarily mean No. 1 in line.

Angel Tree campaign kicks off

The sounds of Christmas flowed through Bonita Lakes Mall Thursday as a chorus of second-graders from Lamar School performed holiday favorites such as "Up On the Housetop" and "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer."	It was the perfect scenario for an occasion dedicated to making sure that Christmas will be merry for local children.

Threefoot alternative

Just before the city council has to make its final decision on the Threefoot Hotel Project, local hotelier Abdul Lala, president of Lala Enterprises and owner of 12 hotels in Mississippi and Alabama, has stepped in and effectively told the city, "Hey, wait a minute! I've got another idea." Lala wants to build a $30 million dollar new Hyatt Place franchise hotel and banquet hall on the west side of 23rd Avenue, across the street from the Kress building. The hotel would be all new construction and would require the demolition of several buildings on the two blocks between 23rd and 25th avenues and Fifth and Sixth streets.
