Suqualena Community Development Club

The Suqualena Community Development Club held a Soup, Chili, Hamburger fundraiser supper on Oct. 19, 2009. Proceeds will benefit the Suqualena Volunteer Fire Department and the club's scholarship fund.

Nominations were announced for the club's 2010 officers. They were: Becky Fulton, president; the Rev. Virgil Walters, vice president; Harriett Touchstone, secretary; JoAnn Kimbrell, treasurer; and Norma Cooksey, reporter.

Following the supper, Al Kimbrell, president, called the group together for the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, which was lead by Walters.

Annette Palmer presented a recitation about the little newspaper boy in Chicago who was living on the streets. He was cold one night and asked a policeman if there was someplace where he could sleep inside. The policeman told him to go to the big white house down the street and knock on the door, and when someone answered the door to just say, "John 3:16."

The boy thanked the policeman and went to the house and when the lady opened the door, he said, "John 3:16." The lady invited him in to sit by the fire, after which she fed him a warm supper and filled a tub with warm water so he could have a nice bath and then she tucked him in a nice warm bed. After each of these happenings, he would say to himself, "John 3:16. I don’t understand, but it sure does may a poor boy feel good."

Palmer said that is how we should be about God; we don’t understand why he sent his son to die on the cross for us but it sure does make a poor sinner feel good when we accept him.

Afterwards, Palmer sang "Amazing Grace," accompanied by Pat Howse on guitar.

In the absence of the Suqualena Volunteer Fire Department Chief Tom Jones, Kimbrell said the chief expressed his appreciation to everyone for their help throughout the year and especially those who helped with the fish fry fundraiser earlier in the month.

Kimbrell said the fire department had just completed an evaluation with the state fire marshall and maintained their rating for another year. He announced that the fire station will undergo some remodeling in the near future.

JoAnn Kimbrell presented a report on the amount raised at Suqualena Settlers Day, as well as the evening's supper. Diann Howse announced that the Suqualena Volunteer Fire Department's regular meeting was scheduled for Oct. 20, at which time the Community Development Club would present the check to the VFD.

Touchstone reported on the Tour to Crystal Springs, which she said was nice but very bitterly cold and muddy. She also reported on the tour of the Choctaw Indian Reservation

Beverly Odom won the door prize.

The club's next's meeting is scheduled for Nov. 23, at 6:30 p.m. in the Macedonia Outreach Building
