More than 250 schools in Mississippi participated in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Pennies For Patients Program. It allows students to develop compassion and learn the value of helping others while they are working for a good cause. For three weeks in February, schools collected coins to raise money to help find cures for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s Disease, myeloma research and for patient services.

Newton County Elementary School in Decatur was second overall in fund-raising with a $5,473.57.

With an outstanding amount of determination and compassion, students across the state raised more than $181,000 for the benefit of blood cancer research and patient services.

BUTTERFLIES IN OUR SCHOOL Members of Deb Proctor’s kindergarten class at St. Patrick School are shown releasing butterflies. From left are Jasmine Jordan, Ashton Hamilton, Logan Neese, Proctor, Anna Laurin Brown, Kaitlyn Caffey and Paxton MacNaughton. Proctor was awarded a grant through the Junior Auxiliary of Meridian for her all-encompassing project entitled “Butterflies in Our School.” The live project, which included various aspects of hands-on and book learning, followed the life cycle of the Painted Lady Butterflies from larvae to adulthood. After a month of observing the various stages of development, a special ceremony attended by the whole student body was conducted at the foot of the Easter Cross relating the butterflies’ new life with that of the risen Lord.
