Career Development Center is ‘one-stop’ source
By Ida Brown / senior staff writer
A “one-stop” spot for careers can be found at the Career Development Center on the Meridian Community College campus.
Located in the Webb Center, the “one-stop” center is not exclusive to the Highway 19 North campus.
“We’re open to the community, not just for MCC students,” said Deborah Nettles, coordinator.
The center provides access to career counseling, career information resources, on-line and computer-based career search, career assessment, job placement, employability counseling and training, and resume writing services.
The Career Development Center also recruits, assesses, counsels and refers individuals to training and/or jobs.
“The center’s emphasis is the non-traditional student, such as displaced workers, adults, people seeking career changes and the unemployed,” Nettles said.
Equipped with the latest technology in career decision and job placement, the Career Development Center features a skilled team able to tailor a career path for each client.
A resource library also is available. A representative of the WIN Job Center/Mississippi Employment Security Commission regularly visits the center to offer assistance. In addition, a Prometric Testing Center and Laser-Grade Testing Center for information technology and Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification are located within the facility, Nettles said.
For job seekers, the center provides assistance in developing a career plan, creating a resume, preparing for job interviews and conducting job searches.
“We provide job training information to help our clients become more competitive in the job market,” Nettles said.
For employers, the Career Development Center assists in recruiting and pre-screening candidates for employment.
“Resumes are maintained on file in the center,” Nettle said. “The center can refer individuals with a wide variety of skills and work experience. Employers also have access to information about on-the-job training programs.”
The center’s staff is available to plan career and job fairs, and rooms are available for individual and group interviews.
“We’re ready to provide whatever assistance is needed to help someone land on the right career path,” Nettles said.
