McGrevey, Gunasekara



Mike and Ada McGrevey of Decatur announce the engagement of their daughter, Amanda Catherine “Mandy,” to Surya Gablin Gunasekara, son of Brett and Susanne Conrad of Santa Monica, Calif.

The wedding is set for Sept. 5, 2009, at 6 p.m. and will be held at the McGrevey Home in Decatur.

Mr. Gunasekara proposed to Miss McGrevey at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve in the presence of close friends at the St. Julian Hotel in Boulder, Colo. The couple met at the University of Mississippi during their first day of law school orientation.

The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Iris Boggan and the late Dr. A.P. Boggan of Decatur and the late Mr. and Mrs. George McGrevey of Ocean Springs.

Miss McGrevey received a bachelor’s degree in communications from Mississippi College, where she was a cheerleader, and a member of both the cross country team and soccer teams. She is a graduate of Newton County High School.

Miss McGrevey is currently a third-year law student at the University of Mississippi.

The bridegroom-elect is the grandson of Trula Ruth Gablin and the late Kenneth A. Gablin of Peoria, Ill., and Prof. and Mrs. Valentine Gunasekara, originally of Colombo, Sri Lanka, and currently residing in Sacramento, Calif.

Mr. Gunasekara earned a master’s degree in environmental law and policy from the University of Denver Strum College of Law. He received a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Colorado, where he was a member of the CU snowboard team. He is a graduate of Boulder High School.

Mr. Gunasekara is currently a third-year law student at the University of Mississippi, where he is a National Center for Remote Sensing, Air and Space Law Scholar. Miss McGrevey and Mr. Gunasekara are both currently clerking in Washington, D.C., for the Department of Defense and the Energy and Commerce Committee, respectively. Upon graduation, they plan to return to Washington to begin their legal careers.

The couple will remain in Oxford until May 2010.

Friends and family are invited to attend the wedding.
