Dylan Ray Boyd, a Phi Theta Kappa officer at Meridian Community College, demonstrates how to build a robot to Scouts. When 88 local Boy Scouts gathered for their annual Winter Camp, officers and advisors of MCC's Nu Upsilon Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa academic honor society pitched in and helped. PTK assisted 29 Scout masters on merit badges such as astronomy, architecture, environmental science, chemistry, geocaching, weather, radio, geology, nuclear science, computers and graphic arts. The MCC students’ endeavors were part of PTK’s Honors in Action Project, which stems from the topic, “Culture of Competition.” The officers planned the project with a goal to educate young Scouts about the fields of math and science, while helping them earn merit badges in fun and interesting ways. The officers conducted several hands-on projects, and took field trips to geocache at Bonita Lakes and learned more about how radios work at MCC’s radio station, WEXR FM.
