East Central Community College (ECCC) in Decatur recently published its 2011 Performance Profile using data compiled by the Mississippi Community College Board (MCCB). The publication, referred to as the Community College Report Card, is an annual report made available by the college in compliance with House Bill No. 1071 approved during the 2010 Mississippi legislative session. The bill created an Education Achievement Council (EAC) which was established to set education achievement goals for institutions of higher learning and community and junior colleges in the state and to assist in monitoring progress towards those goals through the preparation of annual institutional and state report cards.
The Community College Report Card, designed to reflect the unique mission of community colleges, incorporates measures closely aligned with the Voluntary Framework of Accountability developed by the American Association of Community Colleges. Therefore, each report card includes information for the specific community/junior college, along with corresponding figures for the state system which includes all 15 state community/junior colleges. Information contained in the report includes student enrollment, degrees awarded, student success, student retention, student progress, workforce development information, GED® and adult basic education statistics, as well as enrollment and success in development or remedial coursework (college readiness).
In the 2011 Community College Report Card, ECCC ranked above the state averages in numerous categories. In the category of Student Success, 28.4 percent of first-time, full-time ECCC students graduated with an Associate of Arts, Associate of Applied Science, or a certificate within three years of beginning a program compared to 23.4 percent statewide. In addition, total Student Success for ECCC, which considers graduation, transfer, and persistence rates was 59.2 percent for ECCC students compared to the statewide average of 58.1 percent. Finally, success on Licensure Exam Pass Rates for ECCC students totaled 95.2 percent compared to the statewide average of 87.7 percent.
ECCC also retained students at a better rate than the state average. Fall 2011 to Fall 2012 retention in Associate of Arts programs was 64.1 percent at ECCC compared to a statewide percentage of 56.8 percent. In addition, retention for that same time period in Associate of Applied Science programs was 62.9 percent at ECCC compared to a statewide average of 58.4 percent. Total student retention for ECCC was 63.9 percent compared to a statewide average of 57 percent.
ECCC also graduated 7.7 percent, or a total of 461, of the GED® recipients in the state while enrolling 3.8 percent of adult basic education students in the state.
According to the Report Card, economically ECCC Associate of Applied Science graduates increased their incomes by more than $20,000 annually as compared to their earnings prior to enrollment in the program. Additionally, ECCC certificate graduates increased their incomes by more than $15,300 annually as compared to their earnings prior to enrollment.
Dr. Billy W. Stewart, president of ECCC stated, “The 2011 Report Card documents that that ECCC is doing many things well as we continue to fulfill 2020 Vision. We are very proud of that and look to strengthen those aspects of our mission that rank above the state average. However, the Report Card has also identified areas of improvement for our college. Likewise, we look forward to working with our faculty, staff, and students to improve in those areas as ECCC strives to become nationally recognized and locally preferred. The overall results of the Report Card demonstrate that ECCC is making great progress in many areas that enables our students to experience an excellent postsecondary education right here at home.”
