MERIDIAN —      • BATON ROUGE, La. – The following local students recently were initiated into the honor society of Phi Kappa Phi:

Carla Pierce of Meridian; Clint McMullan of Enterprise; Michelle Lee of Decatur; Loren Pullin and Lori Wilcher, both of Union; Tabatha Williams of Rose Hill; Robert Smith of Quitman, Sarah Breland of Philadelphia; and Brianna Mills of Waynesboro.

    • COLUMBUS – East Central Community College student Hillary Williams of Philadelphia was one of 33 participants in Mississippi's first NEW Leadership program at Mississippi University Women on May 20-24. The event was hosted by Mississippi University for Women and the Stennis Center for Public Service.

NEW Leadership is a national bi-partisan program developed by Rutgers University to address the under-representation of women in American politics and civic leadership.

The five-day residential institute educates Mississippi college women about the important role that politics plays in their lives and encourages them to become effective leaders in their communities as well as the political arena.

Participants are undergraduate women representing a wide range of socioeconomic, ethnic, racial and educational backgrounds and academic majors. Applicants from non-traditional college students, women of color, and students majoring in fields outside political science were encouraged to apply.

    • Meridian Community College students Hailey Thomas and Emily Sollie were recipients of the University of Mississippi’s Lyceum Scholar Awards.

Thomas and Sollie were two of 10 students presented this award. Each will receive full resident tuition for two years for the scholarship, which totals $6,660 per year.

The Lyceum Scholarship is for transfer students with at least a 3.0 grade point average, 48 transferable community college credit hours and an exemplary record of leadership and service. Both students attended Ole Miss’ Community College Scholarship Day last month and interviewed for this scholarship along with 270 other community college students.

    • DECATUR –Leah Johnson of Louisville was selected East Central Community College’s Associate Degree Nursing Student of the Year at the 2013 ADN Pinning Ceremony in Huff Auditorium. Johnson also provided the address to her fellow graduates.

    • STARKVILLE – Holley A. Harris, a psychology major from Meridian, is among more than two dozen Spring 2013 Mississippi State University graduating seniors who are new members of the university's Society of Scholars.

At the conclusion of the fall and spring semesters, the campus organization recognizes top students who have demonstrated the highest levels of academic excellence in their majors. In addition to a broad, rigorous exposure to arts, sciences and humanities courses, they consistently have demonstrated a sound foundation in languages, mathematics, social sciences and oral and written communication.

Of the approximately 2,400 undergraduate candidates for 2013 spring semester degrees, only 25 students recently were inducted into the society.

More than 500 students have been honored with membership since the organization was founded in 1981 with 21 charter members.

In addition to Mississippi, this year's group also represent Alabama and Tennessee.

Harris is the daughter of Charles and Pamela Harris of Meridian.
