ECCC Theta Xi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa receives international, regional awards

MERIDIAN —     DECATUR – East Central Community College has received an international honor by Phi Theta Kappa, the academic honor society for community colleges.

During the Phi Theta Kappa 95th International Convention in San Jose, Calif. ECCC’s Theta Xi chapter earned the International Distinguished Honors in Action Theme Award.

“Our Phi Theta Kappa students have worked extremely hard this year in the classroom, in the community, and on campus,” said ECCC’s PTK Theta Xi Chapter co-advisor Amanda Walton. “They have worked with other clubs and organizations to raise money to upgrade technology in our classrooms. Their efforts and achievements are to be commended. They have shown tremendous leadership skills this year, and we are proud of everything they have accomplished.”

Theta Xi was also recognized at the Regional Hallmark Awards for the Mississippi/Louisiana region, held at Northeast Mississippi Community College, receiving the Five-Star Chapter status based on the number and type of activities undertaken by the chapter. To maintain its Five-Star status, the Theta Xi must maintain its event schedule and student participation. Twenty-two of the 48 chapters in the PTK’s Mississippi/Louisiana region earned Five Star status for 2013.

In addition to the Five-Star ranking, the Theta Xi chapter was also recognized as a Top Ten Most Distinguished Chapter and received the Distinguished Honors in Action Theme Award. Theta Xi Officer Cain Prestage of Carthage was named to the Order of the Golden Key.
