EMCC presents pathways, programs in West Point

MERIDIAN —     WEST POINT – There is more than one way to obtain the skills employers want. And East Mississippi Community College’s Manufacturing Technology and Engineering team was in West Point last night to present the various pathways to those skills.

“We’ve got a lot going on, both in Clay County and at EMCC with the consolidation of Workforce, credit courses and Adult Basic Education under the umbrella of the Manufacturing Technology and Engineering Division. So we wanted to host a special event to educate those community members who didn’t know what is going on and remind those who did,” said Mitzi Thompson, director of EMCC’s West Point Center.

Members from each branch of MTE were on hand at the West Point Civic Center to explain their roles in educating and training citizens, all with the goal of helping people find career employment.

“If someone comes to us and doesn’t have a high school diploma, they go through ABE to earn their GED. If they have their diploma or once they earn their GED, they can go through Workforce training, beginning with the WorkKeys test. Or if they decide to pursue a degree or certificate, we have many high-quality programs to give them more depth,” said Thompson.

Speaking to about 100 guests, Thompson pointed out that ABE classes, manufacturing skills courses and credit programs are available at both the Golden Triangle campus in Mayhew and at the West Point Center. The GT campus houses programs such as Electronics Technology, Welding and Fabrication, Automation & Control, Industrial Maintenance, Drafting and Design, Electrical Technology, Automotive Technology and  Precision Manufacturing & Machining. The West Point Center is home to the Carpentry, Construction Skills, Welding , Adult Basic Education and Manufacturing Skill Programs.

In order to enroll in manufacturing skills classes, individuals must earn a Silver certification or higher on the WorkKeys test. WorkKeys prep courses are available free of charge, as are ABE courses. And those individuals who earn a GED through EMCC are also eligible for a Workforce scholarship that can be used for credit or non-credit courses.

Additional programs like Counseling to Career (C2C) are available for young people. And Workforce offers medical courses such as Certified Nursing Assistant, Phlebotomy and Pharmacy Technician.

“There are so many options available to anyone looking to improve their employable skills. You just need to come see us and let us find which pathway is right for you,” said Thompson.
