Excellence in Education

Gabrielle Morgan has been selected to receive the Riley Volunteer Scholarship at Meridian Community College. This $400 award is funded through the MCC Foundation by the local hospital volunteer organization.

Morgan is a 2006 graduate of Quitman High School. Named All-State and Academic All-American, she was a member of the Lady Eagle Softball Team for two years. Last year, Morgan was named to the Dean’s List, served as secretary for Phi Theta Kappa honorary society, and completed her first year in the Associate Degree Nursing Program. Her career goal includes bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing and extended training to become a nurse practitioner.

Shannon Nicole Gibson has been selected to receive the Bill and Gay Whitworth Scholarship at Meridian Community College. This $1,000 award is funded through the MCC Foundation by Gay Whitworth. William F. “Billy Frank” Whitworth was a long time member of the MCC Foundation Board of Directors. He was actively involved in cultural, civic, and educational projects for the city of Meridian during his lifetime.

Gibson is a 1987 honors graduate of Clarkdale Attendance Center. A sophomore in the University Transfer Program, she is pursuing a degree in education. Gibson is married and the mother of two children. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year college students. Her plans are to teach on the elementary level.

Cynthia Anita Jones has been selected to receive the Madeline Scott Callahan Memorial Scholarship at Meridian Community College. This $1,300 award is funded through the MCC Foundation from an endowment established by the East Mississippi Medical Alliance and Dr. Joel Callahan Sr. Friends and family continue to support this fund. This award perpetuates the memory of Madeline Callahan and her “gift of giving.”

Jones is a 2002 graduate of Neshoba Central High School. A President’s List scholar, she is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year college students. Jones is married and the mother of one son. In addition to being a student, wife, and mother, she works part time. Jones will enter the Associate Degree Nursing Program this fall with her goal being to become a home health or hospice nurse.

BRADENTON, Fla. – Heather Smith Evans received the doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Evans graduated in the Top 10 percent of her class and was inducted into Psi Sigma Alpha osteopathic honor society. She will complete her residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, specializing in emergency medicine.

Evans is the daughter of Rickey and Kathy Smith of Collinsville.
