Recent graduate back in school – teaching

special to the star

Claire Massey, a recent Meridian Community College graduate, returned to her alma mater to teach youngsters tennis.

In addition to sporting tennis rackets, her young charges are also wearing T-shirts that were designed by Massey. In fact, everyone associated with MCC’s College for Kids are wearing Massey’s design, too. As an apprentice in the MCC College Promotions department, Massey was charged with creating the design which incorporates a find-the-hidden-picture element.

“We just loved the design,” said Tanya Thompson, continuing education coordinator who is in charge of College for Kids.

“I just enjoyed doing it,” said Massey about the design and teaching for College for Kids.

A rising junior, Massey will attend Mississippi State University in the fall and study marketing and business.

“I hope to work in the magazine industry,” she said.

While at MCC, Massey netted plenty of honors – in the classroom and on the court. She was a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the international academic honor society, she was on both the president’s and dean’s list and a member of the Lady Eagles Tennis Team. She got to the consolation finals at national competition and also garnered a No. 6 spot in singles.

Massey credits MCC for helping her, too.

“I enjoyed it (her time at the college) so much. I learned a lot about myself. It’s better for you to go to a community college … you build up your grades, your GPA,” she said.

Massey was also able to accumulate scholarships for her study at MSU.
