Officials on track with student recognition

The Meridian Star

MERIDIAN — Soon, area residents will see yard signs all over the city of Meridian that read, "My Child is an Honor Roll Student."

More than 2,500 of the yard signs will be given to the parents of children attending school in the Meridian Public School District who have earned a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

The school district and the city of Meridian are collaborating to provide the signs and several Meridian businesses pitched in to help cover the cost.

Kudos to all involved in the program. The signs will serve as a reminder to residents that the Meridian Public School District is doing good things and, more importantly, will acknowledge high-performing students for their efforts.

"We have to recognize and reward our students for academic success just as much — or more — as we do in extracurricular activities," Meridian Public School District Superintendent Alvin Taylor said. "Letting our students be known throughout their community for what they are doing academically will do wonders for our kids in the classroom and in our schools."

    We agree.
