Winter storm no match for Mississippi warmth

MERIDIAN — The winter storm that crippled much of the South Tuesday and Wednesday could have been much worse here had it not been for the efforts of local emergency responders, organizations and residents.

We all owe a big "thanks" to officers with the Mississippi Highway Patrol and local sheriff's and police departments. Kudos too to the paid and volunteer firefighters and public works employees who worked long hours to help make our roads safe.

Thanks too to the ambulance crews and medical staff on duty no matter the conditions.

We applaud area school officials' decision to close schools Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Although road conditions had vastly improved as of Thursday, we were glad school officials chose to err on the side of caution and wait another day before reopening.

We were also glad to see that many businesses closed their doors so employees could stay home rather than venture out in dangerous driving conditions.

Area churches provided warm meals and clothes to those in need and operators of cold weather shelters, such as the American Red Cross, were not only open but filled beyond capacity. To them, we say, "Thank you."

We also saw random acts of kindness: strangers helping push cars off slick roadways or pulling cars out of ditches.

We are thankful for those of you who checked on a neighbor, pulled double duty when a co-worker couldn't make it in to work or flashed your headlights at oncoming drivers to warn of an icy stretch of road.

We surely have left out many deserving of recognition.

Suffice it to say that Mississippians stepped up when they were needed and that is something in which you all can be proud.

Do you think the city of Meridian should aggressively enforce the city's code enforcement laws on litter, abandoned homes and overgrown lots by issuing tickets and stiff fines?
