June 15, 2007

Man, I really need to work on my punch lines. My “only three people read my blog” comment was supposed to be a shot at self-deprecating humor. I realize that there are actually five people that read (I forgot about two of my reporters). OK, enough with the lame jokes. I get it — not funny.

On the news front, anyone else shocked that Chief Martin is going to be in a run-off? Maybe I’m behind, but I never saw this coming. It will be interesting to see how this one shakes out. It’s hard to imagine anyone else as chief.

And what about Eddie Harper dropping out of the House race? It makes me wonder — after the rush we had of folks qualifying for that race — if we’ll see a max exodus of them dropping out before the primary. We probably need it, considering all 28 people in the race (humorous exaggeration).

Things to look for in this weekend’s edition of the paper:

• A story about defensive driver training for teenagers. I can’t wait to read this one. This was an actual class offered at the training center. And, according to reporter Nathan Martin, it was intense. In Saturday’s paper, we’ll have a story by Nathan and a first-person account of the training from teen columnist Alex Riess. Also, we’ll have video footage on Star Video.

• Full coverage of State Games action, including a photo page in Sunday’s edition. And since our sports staff is a bit slim at the moment, we’ll pull some of our news folks over to help out over the weekend.

• A follow-up to last Sunday’s story about the history of Highland Park. This week, we’ll focus on what has happened to the park and what the city plans to do with it.

I can’t wait to watch the Bulldogs compete in the World Series tonight. I’m not a big baseball fan, but last Friday in Starkville was awesome. The atmosphere was electric. I hope they can continue their magic tonight at 6 p.m.

In other news, it seems some city and county officials are not pleased with our “What’s up with this?” feature in our Monday editions. For the record, it is not a feature we have stopped running. We had a photo glitch last week and one other week we had a question that could not be answered by press time. Let me be clear: this is a feature that will continue to run in our paper. We feel it provides a needed service to our community and it is certainly appropriate.
