2013-14 Leadership Lauderdale class graduates

MERIDIAN —     The East Mississippi Business Development Corporation (EMBDC) held Business Before Hours as the graduation ceremony for the 2013-2014 Leadership Lauderdale class earlier this month. This group of individuals has been in the class since September 2013. They met each month and learned the various infrastructures of Meridian and Lauderdale County, Steven Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, and many other aspects of the local community. They also divide into groups to complete community service projects for the area.

The speaker for the morning's program was Andre Heath, a motivational speaker from the University of Southern Mississippi. Heath focused on "the value of a bothered leader." Asking attendees to think about what bothers them in the community. "I am bothered by the state of our communities, the state of our schools. Our nation is in trouble. Our priorities are misplaced ... You must be bothered, in order to make a difference," said Heath. "Leadership is about influence. Leadership is about getting people together under a common vision to move forward."

The Leadership Lauderdale program continues each year to foster the development of future leaders in the community. The program brings together people from a large range of ages, race, and economic status. For more information on the Leadership Lauderdale Program, please contact Michele Thames at or 601-693-1306.

Do you think the city of Meridian should aggressively enforce the city's code enforcement laws on litter, abandoned homes and overgrown lots by issuing tickets and stiff fines?
