Featuring local artists

By Steve Gillespie / managing editor

Well we brought you the antics of our Meridian Star Newsroom Diva Ida Brown for several weeks on our Meridian 360º video promos that are posted on The Meridian Star Web site, www.meridianstar.com, as well as the Meridian 360º Myspace profile at www.myspace.com/meridian360.

We received a lot of feedback on Ida, who is now retired after having been hospitalized with exhaustion (kidding).

So in her place we thought we'd feature some other talents. Last week I hope you caught that we branched out a bit with our video presentations to bring you local singer-songwriter Logan Comby doing one of his songs. This week we are spotlighting local talent Cory Brown, doing an original song as well. So I hope you keep an eye on what we're calling our Meridian 360º Featured Artists. We have a lot of talent around here and we'd like to give them as much exposure as possible.

I guess this is the equivalent to what radio stations used to do back in the 1950s, and later even, when they would have an artist come in sometimes and play music live — one take.

Scary musical

postponed

Did you know John Mellencamp and Stephen King were collaborating on a musical?

Atlanta's Alliance Theatre announced in February that it had plans to stage "Ghost Brothers of Darkland County" by Mellencamp and King next April, but this week the theatre announced that production will be postponed, possibly until the 2009-2010 season.

Set in 1957, the theatre calls it a "sultry, Southern, gothic mystery with a blues-tinged, guitar-driven score," according to the Associated Press.

The musical also is set in a fictional town in a real state ... you guessed it ... Mississippi.

Scary early TV available

And still with a '50s theme, a four-disc DVD is now available from Shout Factory for all you old kiddies out there.

It's called "Hiya, Kids!! A '50s Saturday Morning." It costs $34.99, with shows like "Sky King," "Annie Oakley," "The Cisco Kid," "Andy's Gang," and "The Roy Rogers Show," for all those western fans.

Puppet fans can look forward to programs like "Kukla, Fran and Ollie," and "Howdy Doody."

Other shows you can watch are "The Pinky Lee Show" and "Ding Dong School."

Young people who wonder why Baby-Boomers are so weird need to watch this.
